In 2017, the first Black Books Fair took place for three days at the lecture hall of the Visual Arts Centre in Hong Kong. It was an event following the footpaths of the ABFs (Anarchist Book Fairs) all these years in many great cities of the world. Aside from the locals, people from Britain, the States, Japan, Taiwan and mainland China made it to the venue floored by books and zines and posters, augmented by poetry reading, music performances and practices sharing. Then a BBA (Black Book Assembly) was carried forward by participants of the first run the
following year.

Then Hong Kong went through a tunnel to hell of being unborn. The original seed-sower, the self-proclaimed catalysta, whistle-blower, caretaker, mid-wife and conspirer, Lenny, was stranded in Taipei city by the pandemic that tried to take over the world. Five years on, the whistle is blowing a new call for the Black Books Documenta Assemblage 2023 Taipei City, the basic nature of design if there is any, is retaining the former essence of disarmament / abandonment of organizer / curatorial authority. There are only a few friends to collect the physical and digital works for the Assemblage, preparing them for display, co-ordinating the event schedules of performative happenings and gatherings for sharing.

Metaphorically, a gathering of individual rural farmers meeting up to share their various produces at a word-and-mouthed rendezvous. Three places agreed to house the event with no cost, but providence of kindness to see it happen.

It could be seen as a collective performance art piece to purge the ownership, financial requirements and profiteering of any activity. All those who engage, are bearers of providence. The providence of place and space, the providence of physical works and digital copies thereof. So, please send your work in whatever format, genres, practices, mediums…. and the providence of time if amicable – It would be great to meet up in person in this most peaceful city; but if geography is a hindrance, pitch in your works. The collection is a cannon of solidarity to disarm hostility and misunderstanding, to break down walls in between. Ciao!

  1. i really wonders whether it is still relevant or appropriate to describe the repression that we are in nowadays with the Pyramid of Capitalist System… also, the adaptation of adding a character wearing a safety helmet (and seemingly a google and respirator) waving a rainbow flag at the lower left of the pyramid is really wishful thinking at best. last but not least, adapting the “we eat for you” slogan with “好撚香港 (very fucking Hong Kong)” really make me wonder why does it has to be so Hongkong-centric!?…

just my responses, i am certainly not asking or calling for any revision… as much as i disapprove of it, but i still think he has a right and should have a space to expression Himself.
