Sitting-In in Seoul

15 March 2025

Last night, the striking union started a high-rise sit-in.

It’s a 30-meter tower. It’s a union of non-regular workers at a shipyard. They went on strike in 2022, but the company sued us for ₩470 billion won (USD$32,000,000) in damages. We are continuing to struggle, but the company is pressuring us, and we climbed the pylon last night.

There are now three high-profile sit-ins.

The other one is a person who is occupying a factory. Day 433, two female workers are on strike. There was a fire in the company, and the company closed the factory after receiving fire compensation from the insurance company without taking any measures. The company made a big profit. They are demanding to be transferred to the same company’s factory in another area. It is a burned factory, so it looks fine in the photo, but it is actually a burned and abandoned building.

Also, this is a place called Sejong Hotel, where fired workers are fighting for reinstatement. They were laid off at the time using corona as an excuse and have been fighting for years. Recently, they started a sit-in. We climbed the traffic guidance LED structure on the road. It is the 33rd day.

This union is small and weak, so it is difficult to struggle. But recently, as many citizens came to the streets during the martial law situation, this struggle became known. So we thought it was possible and started the struggle.

Gathered to support farmers’ tractor protests.
The police have blocked the road, so we are holding a sit-in on the road.
This is from yesterday, there was a police invasion at dawn and now they are fighting elsewhere.
Since last week, the situation has become sensitive and bad, so the Korean civil society movement is in the process of fighting and organizing in a very tense and overwhelming way.
Tomorrow there is a one-day general strike. Of course, it is not easy and difficult, but the KCTU ( labor union) has decided to do it.

The person on the tractor banner is Bong Joon Jeon. He was a revolutionary in the 1890s who fought for human liberation and equality. It was a movement called donghak. It was a big grassroots movement. Many social movements in Korea remember him and try to keep him alive, especially in the peasant movement. He’s a symbol.
Korean anarchism considers his ideas and activities as self-made anarchism.
A typical slogan is, “People are the sky “. All human beings are dignified and there is no top nor bottom, and everyone is equal. At that time, it was a dynasty, a class society, and the king was the sky.
